Forum Session

The Future of CHIP
November 1, 2013

Eileen Salinsky, MBA, Consultant

Health reforms enacted through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) have raised a variety of new challenges and opportunities for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP); in 2012, the program provided coverage to over 8 million children. This Forum session examined key decisions and concerns currently facing state policymakers related to the implementation of new eligibility and enrollment processes, outreach and education efforts, and coordination with state insurance exchanges, with special focus on interactions between CHIP and Medicaid or private plans offered through the exchanges. The session also explored perspectives on CHIP’s long-term role in providing children’s health insurance coverage.
