Forum Session

Toward Safer, Better, More Accountable Health Care: A Conversation with George Halvorson
January 27, 2004

Lisa Sprague, MBA & Sally Coberly, PhD

This session offered the Forum audience the opportunity to engage in dialogue with one of the country’s health care leaders. George Halvorson, chairman and chief executive officer of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. (more commonly referred to as Kaiser Permanente), shared his analysis of problems with the health care system and the steps that could be taken to make it better. Halvorson’s remarks drew on Epidemic of Care, a book that he co authored with George Isham, MD. He focused particularly on quality and information technology issues and suggested ways that Medicare could provide leadership in both measuring quality and rewarding superior performance.
