SCHIPing Away at the Uninsured: Lessons from State Flexibility
March 30, 2001

Jennifer Ryan

With co-sponsorship by the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), this full-day meeting brought together key state and federal staff to review the status of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and consider its successes to date and challenges for the future. Beginning with a presentation of NASHP's most recent 50-state survey of SCHIP implementation as of June 2000, attendees had an opportunity to hear from a large group of federal and state officials and to participate through questions and comments throughout the day. Congressional staff from the two primary authorizing committees with jurisdiction over SCHIP engaged in substantive dialogue with eight SCHIP directors in the morning session. In the afternoon, executive and legislative staff described potential changes and challenges, and SCHIP directors described new and developing program elements from their states.
