National Health Policy Forum

Quality

Cost, access, and quality have long formed a health policy triad. In recent years, greater attention has been paid to quality at the system and the provider level. From establishing evidence-based treatment guidelines to setting and achieving clinical performance targets, insurers, plan sponsors, federal and state governments, and consumers want to help providers ensure quality health care. Many believe that health information technology (IT) capabilities, such as e-prescribing, clinical decision support, and electronically stored imaging will play an increasingly important role in improving the quality of the health care system, enhancing both the safety and appropriateness of care.

The Forum’s work on quality focuses on physician group practice, performance measurement, electronic health records, physician profiling, personal health records, accreditation, innovations on the part of safety net providers, and delivery system design.
