HCFA's Outpatient PPS: Finally Ready to Roll?

Summary

This session examined the Health Care Financing Administration's Medicare outpatient department prospective payment system (OPD PPS) regulation, which, at the time of the meeting, was scheduled to be implemented on August 1, 2000. The session focused on the concept behind the regulation — moving to predetermined payment rates for Medicare hospital outpatient services — and the implementation of an ambulatory payment classification system. It also featured the challenges that the Medicare program, providers, and patients were facing in bringing the new system on line.
