National Health Policy Forum

Pharmaceuticals

Prescription drugs play an ever-increasing role in health care and in discussions of health care costs. Both public and private research organizations spend billions of dollars each year developing and testing drug therapies, and the federal government spends considerable time and money regulating this activity. Complex interactions and relationships between the pharmaceutical industry, the health insurance market, and federal and state governments affect all aspects of the prescription drug market—particularly access and cost.

The Forum’s work related to pharmaceuticals addresses private market aspects of the development and delivery of prescription drugs, as well as the role and impact of government regulation and public purchase through Medicare, Medicaid, and the Public Health Service.
